Thank you Pep band Members for playing Friday night. Parents – if you haven’t heard, the students raised an AMAZING $18,500 from the MEGA Car Wash! WOW!!!! Well done! This coming week is Homecoming week so we will be busy! Read carefully.
This Week
Monday – Normal day.
Tuesday – Normal Night rehearsal. We will need the Freshman Roadies to bring out the back drops as well as the sound system. We will color Dr. Thomas’ (and Brianna & Hupe) hair first things at 6:00p. While we need to continue learning drill, we also need to practice where the props go as well as practice with the pit so that we can perform well on Friday night. Percussion – we’ll try to have a gym for you to practice in when the marching band leaves so you can practice for Warrensburg.
Wednesday – Normal Class. Pep Rally at 7:00p at the north parking lot. We’ll unlock the band room at about 6:40p. We need to walk to the Antioch parking lot at about 6:50. The pep rally begins at 7:00p. We should be finished by 7:30. I’ve heard there will be food trucks at the bon fire location if you want to come early to partake.
Thursday – Homecoming Parade at 1:00p. Parents – we march from SM West to old downtown OP. Come watch if you can. Many parents take a late lunch to come out and cheer on the kids. I’ll put out a dismissal list for all marching band members to get out of class at 12:30. If you have third lunch, join us as soon as you can. Uniform is Band T-shirt with jeans, shorts, or whatever on the lower half with tennis shoes.
Friday – Homecoming Game. Call time is 4:00p in the band room. We’ll have our rehearsal at the stadium at 5:00, followed by dinner, then pregame. The king and queen crowning will take place at halftime, therefore we’ll perform our show POST GAME, then load the trailer and head home. NEWS FLASH – This Game is at NORTH stadium.
NEXT WEEK
Monday – Sep. 30 – Shawnee Mission Marching Festival @ South Stadium. Please let your coaches know that you have a performance that night. We will meet in the band room to change into uniform at 5:00p. We will depart at 5:30, arrive at the stadium, unload and warm-up from 6:00-6:45. Parents – this is a free event showcasing all of our SMSD Bands before they go into competition later in the week. Please come cheer on your sons and daughters! We will perform first at 7:00p. The night will conclude around 8:30. We’ll be back at West by 9:15 or a little after.
Tuesday – NO Marching Band Rehearsal.
We WILL have a BAW meeting at 7:00p taking care of business quickly so we can have…
First London Meeting at 7:30p in the cafeteria. This is for ALL West HS Band and Dance Team Parents and Students grades 9-11. Dr. Thomas will unveil exactly what the London Trip consists of as well as costs, payment dates, and additional fundraising opportunities. PLEASE come join us even if you think you may not be able to go. The London Committee is working hard to raise money to allow ALL students to attend next year.
Wednesday – Students planning to audition for the District Honor Band – I will have a sign-up list for you to indicate your interest. I need to know of your intent so I can sign up by this date. Hopefully, you have been practicing.
Saturday – Oct. 5 – Percussion and Dance Team – Warrensburg Indoor competition. See attached schedule. We have a 6:15a load time for the trailer and bus. We’ll be back by 1:00p. Lunch will be on your own upon our return. Do we have some parents signed up to help us load and move equipment? Percussion parents – this is where we need your help. Freshman Roadies, we could use your help here as well if possible.
Attached are ALL the schedules for our three marching festivals – UCM (Percussion and Guard), K-State, (Full MB), and KBA (Full MB).
Freshman parents – Are you seeing the instruments come home? The students DO have homework – it is called practice. We have music that is due to be performed from memory (the West Fight Song), as well as music for a concert in a couple of weeks on October 10. The dress for this event is just “nice” dress clothes. No jeans, no shorts, no tennis shoes etc.
For ALL parents – The handbook alluded to black formal dress for our concert apparel. We have finalized this to make it easier to accomplish for all concerned. Students will need this for the December concert and beyond.
Men – Black dress pants, belt, shoes, socks, and long sleeve dress shirt. BAW will provide a black jacket to wear with what you provide.
Ladies – Long black dress and skirt with black long sleeve top with black dress shoes. All skirts and dresses should be mid-calf or longer (2”-4” from the floor at most)
Hopefully these won’t be hard to find and can be used in other situations.
Enough for now. It is a busy, but fun week. Let’s ‘Sko Vikes!
