The SMSD highlights a new reading theme each month in its Read Across SMSD program. Inspired by one of the selected books for April 2023, Dr. Bill Thomas and a group of students from Shawnee Mission West wrote and performed an original song.

The April Read Across SMSD theme is focused on “Make Music”. The elementary book selection is “A Song of Frutas” by Margarita Engle. The book tells the story of a young girl who visits her grandfather in Cuba. Her grandfather uses music to sell different kinds of fruit to the people in his community.
